About

About Cary Homeschoolers

CHS was started in January 2001 and grew rapidly. We currently have approximately 230 member families, with children ranging in age from newborn to 18. We have 2 regular on-going activities that are available year round to both members and non-members. These include: Park Day (open weekly to non-members) Game Day (open the first week of the month to non-members) Members also organize a number of other activities throughout the year. Though the current activities may vary, a few examples of those that have occurred in the past include:

  • Field trips (NC Zoo, post office, nuclear plant, fire station, NCSU, Oak Park Historic Site, Duke Primate Center, NC Museum of Life and Science, etc.)
  • Group activities (Middle school book club, blueberry and strawberry picking, soap making, cheese making, Durham Bulls games, rock climbing, bowling, etc.)
  • Classes (Crowder Park Wilderness classes and many other nature classes, NC Museum of Natural History, Hemlock Bluffs, art classes, etc.) Coops (Science, history, craft, fairy tales, etc.)
  • Parent information meetings (Curriculum discussions, testing, learning styles, homeschooling special needs children, etc.)

Our philosophy is that if there is something that you would like to see but it isn’t here, feel free to either organize it or find someone who would like to help. If your child has an interest and you can’t find anyone with similar interests, organize a small event for that age group on that topic and see who shows up!

Joining Cary Homeschoolers

Cary Homeschoolers has a number of events open to non-members that you can attend as often as you like before deciding whether or not this group is for you. These activities occur year round and include:

  • Park Day every Friday
  • Game Day the first Wednesday of the month

For more information about these activities, please email our general contact person by clicking here. To become a member, you must attend an activity in person. At these “open” activities, a host can give you information about the group and provide you with the information you need to sign up for the group.

Membership Commitment

Our group does not have dues.* However, to encourage group commitment and to ensure we have a wide range of available activities, each member is asked to organize or plan two activities per year for the calendar. Activities can be almost anything that sounds interesting to you. For example: field trips, themed or un-themed play dates, holiday gatherings (for kids and/or parents), book or curriculum discussions for parents, classes/unit studies organized by parents or set up by someone else such as Crowder Park, etc., host for Park Days, volunteer activities, clubs, trips to plays or musicals, etc. Activities do not have to be planned the first 3 months of membership. If you need help with activity ideas or planning, we have people who can help. * Our members have found several ways to help fund our organization without dues.
